Everything was too based on luck to that point that there was never a completely certain strategy.

No 100% or 0% hit rates, halving the hit rates to steal capture/rescue enemies (necessary to get money), extremely small random growth rates in some exotic categories compared to the other FE games. The level design probably was the best of the series, due to the detailed maps and varied objectives (without almost any pointless "filler" levels that appear in the from the GC and Wii FEs) but many new gameplay systems only hurt the overall package of the game.

I'll never understand all the critical acclaim that Thracia gets. It's cool that it has a translation out now, and since it's a PS1 game, it'll be more accessible to people (for obvious reasons). Fire Emblem is still a good series, Berwick Saga is just that much better, and it's a big shame that western audiences have missed out on it. Man, I could go on and on, but it's kind of useless since barely anyone's played the game here.īottomline, it's better than Fire Emblem by miles (except for Thracia 776, which remains unparalleled today among SRPGs IMO). Unlike TearRing Saga, which was a grinder's paradise (I loved every second I invested in slaying 3000 enemies in the arena with Klycine and racking up hundreds of master weapons), Berwick Saga had no places where you could abuse leveling and you had a very limited number of units, and it took a lot of effort to actually recruit them permanently to your army.

We're not talking frustrating and somethings irrational Hoshigami level (where enemies just outnumbered and outpowered you and the only way to win was to grind), we're talking you have to actually use your brain to figure out how to beat scenarios. What I like about Berwick Saga, is not only does it introduce an original system (with the hex-based maps and the original turn switching based on # of units both sides have), but the game brings difficulty to a whole new level. It's easy to tell the difference if you've played all of the games, in the order they came out. I don't know what farnham was smoking, but when Kaga left Nintendo, something in Fire Emblem kind of died. I think i'm the biggest Berwick Saga fanboy on this forum.īerwick Saga is AMAZING. Plus, the music is, as mentioned, really excellent.

I'm a sucker both for srpgs and that in-combat art style, so this was a fun discovery, and I didn't see them mentioned with a quick search. In any case, check out some youtube videos, they're worth watching, and you can get a sample of the Berwick Saga soundtrack.Īnyway, I just thought that stuff was neat. Both have phenomenal 2d animations for the combat. (google it, easy to find places that sell it)Īs for the games themselves, Tear Ring looks very similar to the FE stuff I've seen and played, but Berwick looks a bit different (zomg hexes). Second, you must go track down the soundtrack to Berwick Saga. Heck, there's a used copy of Berwick Saga on ebay right now. Now, finding an actual copy of the game might be problematic, but I'd imagine some friendly jgaffers could help out with that. By that point however, Emblem Saga had been released on the PSX in Japan in 2001, and work had already begun on a sequel, Berwick Saga on the PS2, released in 2005.

Nintendo sued, lost, sued on appeal, won partially. He left, founded Tirnanog software, and started work on a game called Emblem Saga.
